REFLECTION 7 (Computer Mediated Communication-CMC)

Alhamdulillah. What a great break! Alhamdulillah. All of us managed to get back at IIUM exactly a day before the class started. Of course, Dr Rozina would not waste time and started introducing Computer Mediated Communication (CMC) to us on our first class of the week.

These are the rough ideas that we have on CMC. Computer Mediated Communication can be considered as all sorts of communication via networked computer and it can be divided into two types: 1. Real time CMC and 2. Non-real time CMC. Dr Rozina also talked on what is meant by the syncronous mode of CMC. Based on what we understood, both real time CMC and non-real time CMC consist of the combination of spoken and written language.

For example, when we chat on Facebook, we tend not to use the formal language of writing. We tend to write as how we utter the conversation via oral speech. Instead of writing “It was a hard task”, we tend to write “Arghhhh, seriously, it was hard L”. We might include the expression “arghhhh” to indicate how stressful we are and the emoticon (L) to indicate that we feel sad because of the hard task. That is one example of how real time CMC is said as the combination of written and spoken language.

Other than that, we were also officially explained on our second assignment that needs to be submitted after two weeks. From the explanation given, the tasks sound difficult. Hopefully, with a great team work, we can do it!
